Rediscovering Sacred Relationship
For many African communities, nature has never been separate from spirit. Rivers are ancestors. Mountains are protectors. Trees are elders. The land is alive, and we belong to it, not the other way around.
This worldview, echoed in indigenous African traditions, teaches us to live with humility, reciprocity, and care. It challenges the extractive mindset that sees nature as a resource to conquer, rather than a partner to protect.
It is this spiritual lens that we must recover and honour if we are to build a future rooted in wholeness, justice, and healing.
Laudato Si’: A Call to Ecological Conversion
The Catholic social teaching encyclical Laudato Si’, written by Pope Francis, offers a powerful invitation: to undergo an ecological conversion — a transformation of heart that leads us to care for our common home with love, not just strategy.
Laudato Si’ reminds us that:
“Everything is interconnected… and genuine care for our own lives and our relationships with nature is inseparable from fraternity, justice, and faithfulness to others.” (Laudato Si’, §70)
It speaks to the interconnectedness of all life, the need to center the poor and vulnerable in climate action, and the moral duty to protect creation.
At Shared Futures, these teachings guide our work, inspiring us to blend faith, ecology, and justice in all our programmes, from conservation hikes to reforestation and eco-leadership training.
This is not about religion — it is about rootedness. About leading from a place of reverence and responsibility, not fear or guilt.
