
Across Africa, food insecurity continues to rise — not because people lack the will to grow food, but because the systems meant to support them are broken. Farmers face degrading soils, unpredictable rainfall, and the rising cost of fertilizers and pesticides. These challenges are compounded by the climate crisis, which threatens to halve crop yields in parts of the continent by 2050 (IPCC, 2021).
But there is a regenerative, dignified way forward — and it begins with agroecology.
What Is Agroecology?
Agroecology is a holistic approach to farming that combines traditional knowledge with ecological science. Instead of depending on chemical inputs, agroecological farming nourishes the soil naturally, using composting, intercropping, rainwater harvesting, and agroforestry. It’s about working with nature, not against it.
Unlike industrial agriculture, agroecology isn’t just about food production; it’s about resilience, sovereignty, and justice.
Why Shared Futures Is Launching an Agroecology Training Programme
At Shared Futures, we believe that Africa’s farmers, especially youth, women, and rural communities deserve access to the skills and support that will allow them to thrive on their own terms. Our Agroecology Training Programme is designed to equip farmers with the tools they need to regenerate their land, adapt to climate change, and build local food systems that are sustainable and sovereign.
This initiative will include:
- Hands-on training in climate-smart farming practices
- Demonstration farms and peer learning exchanges
- Support for forming cooperatives and accessing local markets
- Partnerships with research institutions and agroecology networks
Our approach is inspired by successful models across the continent. In Senegal, the NGO ENDA Pronat has helped thousands of women farmers increase yields and reduce costs using agroecological practices. In Zimbabwe, agroecology has been shown to outperform conventional farming during drought years — a vital lifeline as weather becomes more erratic.
We aim to build on this momentum by adapting agroecology to local realities, co-creating knowledge with communities, and embedding food sovereignty at the heart of climate action.
Why This Matters Now
In 2025, Africa remains at the epicentre of global hunger, with acute food insecurity afflicting millions due to a convergence of conflict, climate shocks, economic instability, and displacement.
According to the World Food Programme’s 2025 Global Outlook:
- In Eastern Africa (p.13), nearly 62 million people are acutely food insecure. Over 834,000 face famine, particularly in conflict-affected areas of Sudan and South Sudan.
- In Southern Africa (p.6,19), an El Niño-induced drought has slashed maize production by half, affecting over 30 million people, especially in Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Malawi.
- In Western Africa (p.20), 57 million people face acute hunger, driven by armed conflict and mass displacement, with Nigeria, Burkina Faso, and Mali reporting catastrophic food insecurity.
- Flooding continues to devastate communities across the Sahel, Sudan, and South Sudan (pp.5–6), further crippling local food systems.
- The Foreword (p.4) confirms famine conditions in Zamzam camp, Sudan, and flags urgent hunger threats in DRC and Nigeria.
These alarming figures are not just statistics — they represent lives on the brink. As climate disruptions deepen, it is clear that business-as-usual farming models will not suffice.
Our Agroecology Training Programme is a direct response to this crisis. By regenerating soil, reducing input dependency, and promoting diversified, climate-resilient farming, agroecology can reverse the trend of food insecurity and return control to farmers and communities.
As captured in the FAO’s 2018 publication, The 10 Elements of Agroecology: Guiding the Transition to Sustainable Food and Agricultural Systems, agroecology serves as a practical and philosophical framework to guide countries in transforming their food and agricultural systems toward sustainability. It is a systems-based approach that integrates ecological science with traditional knowledge and social equity to address interconnected challenges like hunger, biodiversity loss, soil degradation, and inequality. Rather than merely improving existing industrial models, agroecology calls for structural transformation—rooted in human dignity, local empowerment, and regenerative practices—to ensure resilient, nutritious, and inclusive food systems.
This is the transformation we aim to co-create — where the land heals, farmers thrive, and hunger no longer defines the African story.
