On April 22 something special happened. From 12:00 to 15:30, members of the Shared Futures (SF) team—along with family and friends—gathered at The Wilds Nature Reserve in Johannesburg to mark Earth Day 2025.
It was a small, informal gathering. There were no speeches or staged moments—just a shared intention to reconnect with the Earth, with each other, and with the deeper purpose that brought us together. And somewhere between reflection, conversation, and laughter among trees, Shared Futures quietly experienced its soft launch.

Walking Gently into Purpose
The theme for this year’s Earth Day, “Our Power, Our Planet,” is a call to action—to unite around clean energy, environmental justice, and community-powered change. At Shared Futures, it’s a call that echoes at the heart of our mission: that a sustainable, inclusive future is something we co-create, step by step.
To honour this, we began with a short grounding moment to set our intentions, then set off on a slow, meditative hike through the green trails of The Wilds. It was a walk punctuated by moments of pause—to breathe, to listen, and to truly see. We soaked in the beauty of the land and reflected on our responsibility to protect it.

Each person—young and old—collected small tokens of nature along the way: a stone, a fallen leaf, a petal, a sprig of wild plant. At the end of the hike, we gathered in a circle, using these tokens as anchors for reflection. Each one became a symbol of hope, gratitude, or action—a reminder of our connection to the Earth and the commitments we carry forward.
The children brought their own magic, freely exploring, interacting with the trees, and sharing what they knew about nature in the most joyful and sincere ways.
A Tribute, A Beginning
This Earth Day also marked ten years since Laudato Si’, Pope Francis’ powerful call for ecological conversion. The news of his passing the day before added a quiet reverence to the day. Our time in nature became both a celebration of the Earth and a tribute to the Vicar of Christ whose voice continues to inspire and guide our work.
“Take care of the Earth and take care of each other.”
Though it was a humble gathering, it marked a meaningful first milestone for Shared Futures. We didn’t need a stage or a crowd to begin—just the intention to live our values, one mindful step at a time.

We also carried with us a deeper truth: every day is Earth Day. The small, everyday things we do—the way we work, the choices we make, the way we care—are all part of safeguarding our planet. Advocacy, education, restoration, connection: they don’t begin and end with a single day. They live in our daily acts, in our work with communities, and in how we show up for the world.
This was just the first step. A soft, steady start. A shared intention to walk forward—together.
